Napoli's Passive Play and Tactical Choices Analyzed by Sky's Marchegiani

Napoli's passive approach for a significant portion of the game, characterized by a late surge of effort, was a focal point in the Sky Calcio Club studio. Former goalkeeper and technical commentator Luca Marchegiani weighed in on the matter.

Marchegiani believes Napoli's initial formation was excessively defensive. He suggested that players like De Bruyne could have been introduced earlier, and that the midfielders, specifically Anguissa and McTominay, were tasked with playing too deep. This positioning meant they were far from the opposition's goal when Napoli regained possession, reducing McTominay's effectiveness. While the second half showed improvement, and similar tactical issues were observed in Genoa, Marchegiani emphasized that the game plan for a match is not a fixed strategy applicable to all fixtures. He speculated that this might be due to conditioning or tactical reasons, but the initial game plan was clearly not optimal.
