Ocean Under Unprecedented Strain as El Niño Supercharges Warming to Record Levels

Global ocean temperatures have reached an all-time high, with the El Niño phenomenon exacerbating existing global warming and placing unprecedented stress on marine environments.

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union, the daily average sea surface temperature (SST) recorded on Saturday, August 22, surpassed all previous records since data collection began in 1979.

"This record serves as a stark indicator of an ocean facing escalating pressure," stated Samantha Burgess, lead of climate strategy at Copernicus. "While El Niño contributes additional heat, it's superimposed on decades of human-induced warming. The continued rise in ocean temperatures intensifies the risks for marine ecosystems and coastal communities."

Human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels and other emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and greenhouse gases, are the driving force behind global warming. These gases trap heat by absorbing radiation.

El Niño, which was officially declared underway on June 11, is temporarily amplifying this warming trend. As the warm phase of a natural climate pattern, El Niño is characterized by unusually warm waters in the Pacific Ocean. While it typically elevates global temperatures and contributes to disruptive weather, the current manifestation appears to be exceptionally potent.

Researchers have cautioned that the world might be on the verge of a historic "super El Niño," which could trigger a humanitarian crisis and push already strained climate ecosystems beyond a critical tipping point.

A New Record

Copernicus utilizes satellite data with temperature-measuring sensors to estimate global SST. These readings indicated that the SST reached 21.1 degrees Celsius (69.98 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, marginally exceeding the previous record of 21.09 C (69.96 F) set in 2024, which was the hottest year on record overall. The records in 2024 were influenced by the previous El Niño, which was close to the "super" threshold but not as extreme as what is currently anticipated.

The recent SST record is particularly noteworthy because a daily high so late in the year is unusual. Copernicus representatives noted that the warmest daily temperatures are typically observed in March and April, following the Southern Hemisphere's summer.

Copernicus officials highlighted that this record aligns with long-term warming trends and the development of an extreme El Niño event. Recent months have also shown consistently high average SSTs, with both June and July setting new monthly records. This persistent increase underscores the "unprecedented strain" on the ocean, as stated in the report.

A warming ocean contributes to rising sea levels, increasing the threat to coastal communities worldwide. Furthermore, warmer waters negatively impact coral reefs and other vital marine ecosystems, affecting food webs and the populations that rely on them. Ocean warming also influences weather patterns and fuels further global warming, creating a cyclical effect.

Super El Niño

The full impact of the ongoing El Niño is still unfolding and will become clearer later this year and into next. However, the U.S. Climate Prediction Center forecasts a greater than 90% probability of very strong El Niño conditions emerging in the fall and winter.

The UK's Met Office recently announced that this year's El Niño is projected to be the most significant in recent history and potentially the largest since the 19th century.

"It is important to emphasize that this is an unprecedented event," said Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the Met Office, in an August 21 statement. "I have never seen an El Niño signal this intense in our forecasts."

While a strong El Niño does not automatically guarantee more severe weather or other impacts, the likelihood of such events increases with the intensity of the phenomenon. The Met Office pointed out that India's summer monsoon season, which is among the regional weather patterns influenced by El Niño, is already experiencing significantly below-average rainfall.

In the United States, El Niño typically leads to warmer winters in the northern regions, while the southern states are more prone to stormy weather. However, the specific effects of each El Niño event can vary.
