Lincoln Secure Historic First Second-Tier Victory in 65 Years

August 30, 2026Diego Herrera2 мин

Lincoln City achieved their first win in the second tier of English football in 65 years, with Ben House scoring the decisive goal in the 66th minute to secure a 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Bolton Wanderers. This marks a significant achievement for the SkyBet League One champions from last season.

The Imps had faced defeats in their opening two Championship matches against Middlesbrough and Portsmouth. However, after Bolton struggled to break down City's solid defense, House's goal secured Lincoln's first three points at this level since April 1961.

Goalkeeper George Wickens was instrumental in Lincoln's success, making a series of crucial saves to deny Bolton, who were looking to build on their opening-day win against Preston and a hard-fought draw at QPR. The two teams had played out two draws last season on their way to promotion.

The early stages of the match were evenly contested, with Bolton dominating possession. Their best chances fell to striker Sam Dalby, who narrowly missed connecting with a cross and later hit the post with an effort. House, the eventual match-winner, miskicked an opportunity and was cautioned for simulation.

Bolton continued to press, with Wickens making a fingertip save from a header and denying John McAtee. Dalby headed over, and Ethan Erhahon's shot went narrowly wide, while Bolton's goalkeeper Jack Bonham remained largely untested.

Lincoln showed greater intent in the second half. Ivan Varfolomeev forced Bonham into his first save of the match after Josh Sheehan was dispossessed. Following substitutions by both sides, Lincoln made the breakthrough. A long throw from Callum Elder found House, who headed in from close range.

Despite a more attacking performance from Bolton after their substitutions, Lincoln's defense held firm. Wickens made further saves to deny Kyliane Dong and substitute Ryan Hardie. In stoppage time, Wickens tipped away a free-kick from Josh Sheehan, securing Lincoln's first victory at the Toughsheet Community Stadium and their first away win against Bolton in 42 years.
