Jay Wheeler's 'De Lejitos' Claims No. 1 on Latin Airplay Chart, Artist Expresses Pride
Jay Wheeler's track "De Lejitos" has ascended to the top of Billboard's Latin Airplay chart, marking a significant milestone for the Puerto Rican artist. This achievement comes just five months after Wheeler previously topped the overall Latin radio rankings.
"'De Lejitos' is a special song for me," Wheeler shared with Billboard. "It's a success today because it transitioned from being my daughter Aiunii's favorite to a favorite among all my fans, even before my team and I decided to officially release it. My intention with every song I release is to make people dance, sing, and feel happy. Reaching No. 1 on Billboard genuinely fills me with immense pride."
The song "De Lejitos" captured the top spot on the Latin Airplay chart with 6.7 million audience impressions in the United States during the tracking week of August 14-20, according to Luminate. This represents a 4% increase in impressions from the previous week.
The song's journey on the charts began with a strong debut in the top 20 of the Hot Latin Songs chart in April. It maintained a position within the top 10 for nearly 11 consecutive weeks. The only notable dip occurred during the release week of Karol G's album, when "De Lejitos" moved from No. 7 to No. 18 on the multi-metric tally before returning to the top 10 at No. 8 this week, largely due to a gain in streaming numbers.
On the Latin Airplay chart, "De Lejitos" spent three weeks within the top 20 before reaching the No. 2 position last week. With this latest No. 1, Wheeler now boasts four chart-topping singles. His previous number ones include "Viendo El Techo," "Dos Tragos," and "Si Te Vas," featuring Jay Balvin, which each held the top spot for a week between 2021 and 2026.
Banda El Recodo Revives Classic for No. 1: In other chart news, Banda El Recodo de Cruz de Lizárraga has secured their 21st No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Airplay chart with their rendition of Antonio Aguilar's 1958 hit, "La Cama de Piedra." The updated version was produced by Antonio Aguilar's son, Pepe Aguilar, and the band's leader, Alfonso ‘Poncho’ Lizárraga.
"La Cama de Piedra" climbed to the top spot following a 10% increase in impressions, reaching 5.9 million during the tracking week. This track traded places with Xavi's "Dosis," which dropped from the top position after an equivalent 10% decline in impressions, settling at 5.6 million.
With their 21st Regional Mexican Airplay No. 1, Banda El Recodo has now achieved seven chart-toppers in the 2020s, surpassing their performance in previous decades. They have earned two No. 1s in the 1990s and six in both the 2000s and 2010s. This achievement also ties them with Intocable for the fourth-most number-one singles since the chart's inception in 1994.
