England Secures Dominant Three-Day Victory to Launch New Test Era
Joe Root has marked his first Test match as permanent England captain with a commanding innings and 103-run victory over Pakistan. The visiting side was dismissed for 135 before tea on the third day at Headingley, following their first-innings collapse to 171 in 48.1 overs.
In their second innings, Pakistan was bundled out in just 37.3 overs. England had posted a solid 409 in their sole batting effort. Jofra Archer, showing significant improvement from his initial performance, took 3 wickets for 50 runs, striking early to leave Pakistan at 13-2. Josh Tongue also contributed with a burst of three wickets for 43 runs after lunch, including the crucial dismissal of Shan Masood (29), effectively ending any hope for Pakistan to reach the fourth day.
Root's tactical field placements proved effective, leading to the dismissals of Azan Awais (9) and Saud Shakeel (14). England comfortably crushed their less experienced opponents in what was a one-sided contest.
Gus Atkinson (1-11) took the wicket of top-scorer Mohammad Rizwan (41) to bring England to the brink of victory. Mohammad Abbas (6) was then caught by Dan Lawrence off Archer, concluding the match. Ollie Robinson (3-29) and Josh Tongue were the standout bowlers, each claiming eight wickets in the match.
This victory marks England's first win in 11 Tests. Should they secure another win in the second match at Lord's starting Thursday, they will achieve their first series triumph since December 2024 against New Zealand. While England did thrash Zimbabwe in a one-off match last summer, they have struggled in multi-match series recently, with a draw against India followed by defeats to Australia and New Zealand.
Promising Start for Root's Captaincy, Despite Future Challenges
While more significant challenges await Root's captaincy, including upcoming series against South Africa and the Ashes next summer, this opening win is a positive sign. England's scoring rate of 4.55 runs per over was attributed more to Pakistan's erratic bowling and fielding than aggressive "Bazball" batting. Harry Brook's controlled innings of 91 from 93 balls was a notable highlight.
Other key contributions included first-innings five-wicket hauls from Robinson and Tongue, strong bowling performances throughout, and half-centuries from Root, Brook, Dan Lawrence, and Jordan Cox.
Jamie Smith's dismissal for 25, spooning a short ball to midwicket off Khurram Shahzad (3-133), was one of the few low points on the third morning as England began the day leading by 195 runs. However, Archer (23 not out) and Tongue (8) added some quick runs, with Archer hitting the game's only six.
Pakistan's Batting Woes Continue Amidst England's Dominance
Archer was instrumental in dismantling Pakistan's top order. He trapped Imam at slip and then dismissed Azan Awais. Abdullah Shafique (15) and Shan Masood provided some brief stability before Shafique edged to Harry Brook at second slip off Ollie Robinson.
Following the lunch break, Josh Tongue took crucial wickets, including Saud Shakeel and stand-in captain Salman Ali Agha. Masood was caught at slip, and Salman was given lbw to a swinging delivery. Ali Usman (7) was caught by Jordan Cox after the ball deflected off Jamie Smith's thigh.
Pakistan's struggles were compounded by further mistakes, including Mohammad Rizwan exposing tailender Khurram (8) to Robinson, who was promptly caught. Many of Salman's team's errors occurred during this chastening three-day period in Yorkshire.
