Bologna: Tedesco Defines Goalkeeper Hierarchy, Praises Bernardeschi as Midfielder

August 23, 2026Diego Herrera3 мин

Ahead of the match against Lazio, Bologna's coach, Domenico Tedesco, addressed the team's tactical aspects, including the goalkeeper hierarchy. He clarified the roles of Skorupski and Pessina in goal, with Skorupski established as the number one and Pessina as the backup. Tedesco also expressed optimism about third-choice goalkeeper Happonen and the potential of young Massimo.

The coach also commented on Federico Bernardeschi's performance as a mezzala (an attacking midfielder). Tedesco highlighted Bernardeschi's alertness, his effectiveness in tight spaces and between the lines, his ability to switch play, his vision, and his knack for driving into dangerous areas. He noted that this role is not new to Bernardeschi, having seen similar contributions at Fiorentina and Torino.

Regarding the defensive leadership in the absence of Lucumí, Tedesco emphasized that leadership is expected from all players, regardless of their position, and that everyone should act as captains even without the armband.

Tedesco also shared his philosophy on the deep-lying playmaker (play basso). He stated that his primary objective is to win matches, not merely to focus on possession or build-up play for its own sake. He believes the team needs a strong identity, and the deep-lying playmaker must be courageous in high pressing, intercepting passes, and contributing to the build-up. He acknowledged the complexity and cost of such a player in the transfer market, noting that top players in this role can command fees of around 40 million euros. Tedesco expressed satisfaction with the current options, mentioning Moro, El Azzouzi, and Amondarain as players who can fulfill this role.

The Bologna coach speaks on the eve of the match against Lazio, explaining who is ahead in goal and other aspects related to his team.

Bologna's coach, Domenico Tedesco, during the press conference held on the eve of the match against Lazio – the league opener – also spoke about some tactical aspects and the hierarchy for the goalkeeper position between Skorupski and Pessina. Here are some of his statements:

What will be the hierarchies in goal?
'Skorupski is number 1, Pessina is number 2, then we have Happonen as third who is a promising young lad. Massimo is very young and we see his potential, but Skorupski is obviously ahead in the hierarchy.'

How are you seeing Bernardeschi as a mezzala?
'He's sharp, he's good between the lines and in tight spaces, he has the change of pace, he has vision, he knows how to cut inside to cause damage. He's done it at Fiorentina and Torino too, and it's not a new situation.'

Without Lucumí, who will take on the role of defensive leader?
'We expect leadership from everyone, regardless of role. Just as I expect everyone to be a captain even without the armband.'

What is your idea of a deep-lying playmaker?
'My idea of play is to win matches. We don't play football to keep possession or to show that we know how to build from the back. We need to have a DNA and an identity that must be this. My playmaker must be courageous to press high, to tackle, but also to keep possession and help in build-up play. It's a very complex role. We see that in the transfer market too, because someone who can do both phases costs no less than 40 million. I like both Moro and El Azzouzi, but Amondarain can also play in that role. I am happy with the lads we have.'
